Mission Statement:

The mission of the Capital Campaign Committee for the St. George Greek Orthodox Church “Fr. Germanos Stavropoulos Community Center” is to raise the appropriate amount of funds to build the project. All of the funds raised under this program will go exclusively to the construction of the Community Center. The Center will serve the families and friends of St. George Church, in Norwalk, by providing a facility that will allow the youth to be young, Couples to celebrate, and Parents to be proud. The proposed Community Center will provide the tools and means to help preserve our heritage; a center that will house our Greek School, Sunday School, Athletic Programs, and cultural events. Our Mission is guided by the principals and memories of Father Germanos. Our goal is to have the project either entirely complete or have a good portion of it completed (say for example the exterior shell, something like the way our Church was when we first held our first service inside) so that we can make use of the proposed facility space as soon as possible or within a three-year time frame from the date the initial funds are collected to commence with construction.

Committee Objectives:

Note: The P&Z approval for the project was received on February 2006 (with conditions). Our request for a 1-year extension to secure both zoning and building permits was approved in Mid Jan. 2007. We do not believe that we will be able to obtain anymore than two more extension requests. This gives us (the Parish) approximately 28 to 34 months (i.e., mid to late 2009) to assess the support for the project and collect the necessary funds to begin construction ($1.5M to $2.0M – minimum). In this regard, the Committee's objectives are as follows:
  1. Continue with the effort to collect pledges during the next two-years to determine/confirm if the project will be supported by the community for construction.
  2. At the end of this two-year term and with the knowledge of where we stand as a parish with respect to the type of support (both in pledges and available funds), we will have a gauge that will allow the CC Committee to present to the members and supporters of our parish the possible options and the Committee’s recommendation for review and consideration in determining the next steps (via a general assembly by all supporters/parish members).

Points Worth Noting:

If we don’t get the community’s support with pledges by the time the 3rd extension expires (i.e., early 2010) we will lose our zoning permit and will need to start the entire process again. If we do get the community’s support, with pledges, and available funds in the bank of not less than $1.5M to $2.0M, by mid 2009, we will be able to start with construction documents, which we will need to prepare with the Architectural & Engineering team, to apply for our building permit and proceed towards construction by soliciting for proposals from potential general contractors.

Status of CC Pledges (as of April 2007):

Within the last few months, between November 2006 and April 2007, the number of pledges towards the construction of the Community Center has increased by an additional 18 families. It is nice to see that more families have decided to show their support towards the program and on behalf of the Community Center Committee, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have submitted your pledge, which provides the assurance we need (as a Parish) that this construction project is and will be supported.

However, it should be noted that to this date, over a year since we received our zoning approval, we received pledges from 50 families - that is roughly 10 percent of our parish. In order for us to make this project a reality, we need the support of the St. George Church Parish - otherwise it will be difficult for us to even consider the option of proceeding towards construction. To help in this endeavor and to assist our Committee in collecting everyone’s pledge card and support for the project, please advocate to your friends and relatives that it is important for them to submit their pledge as soon as possible. The CC Committee will also be calling to make appointments for house visits, to inform our friends of the project details, answer any questions that they may have on the project and request for their support by submittal of their pledge card. Please open your doors, look into your hearts and lets all pull together to make this dream a reality!

The 50 pledges received to date total $486,304.00 of which $100,032.83 has been paid (that is an average of $9,726.08 per family). Of course, the average amount that is indicated in this update is based on the number of families and the total amount pledged to date, which is anywhere from $1,000.00 to $50,000.00. A pledge, as a St. George Parish Member or friend, shows your support of the project and an investment in our community's future.........our kids and grandchildren!

Details of project expenses to date, total available funds in account towards the construction of the CC and other Church functions/programs that contribute towards the project are available and may reviewed with the Committee. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the Community Center Committee members that are listed within this website.
